Looking Back... Emma is 17 Months Old!

Once again, tons more has happened this month... it's getting harder & harder to keep up with all the changes. I mean, earlier this month I was so excited to write about how well Emma is eating - from chicken to hummos to pizza to turkey burgers - but turns out that was incredibly short-lived. Right after I made a vat of burgers & spent a bloody fortune on the red pepper hummos from the finest Middle-Eastern grocery store in the city (or at least in my immediate neighbourhood) but then, just one week later, she was back to the old Emma we all know and love. The one who doesn't eat.

She has, however, discovered the joy of spinning in circles to make herself dizzy.

Now forgive me for including this tid-bit late, cuz it started a couple months ago, so please don't think my daughter is catching on slowly, for that is not the case. BUT...
Emma can point out all of the following, on herself and on others. If she does you, be warned... it can be painful.
Eyes (ouch!)
Nose (ouch!)
Mouth (ouch!)
Chin (not so bad)
Teeth (here you've got the upper hand)
Tongue (only painful if she catches it)
Ears (fine so long as you're just wearing studs)
Head (this was the first discovery... happened about 3 months ago)
Hair (can be particularly painful - I think it's a jealousy thing)
And, not be to forgotten, hands, fingers, toes, feet, legs & arms.
All the things that one needs to know to go live in the civilized world.

There has also been an absolute explosion of new words entering her little world. The other evening she was knocking on the window, as we were waiting for the man to bring us pad Thai. I thought she'd love it, considering she loves macaroni & cheese... and Jeez, it's pad Thai - what's not to love? Long story short - she hated it, and proceeded to dump it all over the floor. But back to the words... as we were looking out the window waiting for the delivery man, she knocked & out of nowhere she said "NOCK". And then kept on doing it.

Other new words this month... (this is just a few, there's been many):
Monkey ("Mon-eeee") He's her "pick of the month". Right up there with her blanket.
Bee (sounds like bee)
Door (anytime she hears anything coming from the front of the house, she pipes up with a "Dooor")
Mommy ("Maaamm-eeeee")
Daddy ("Daaa-eeeee") Really cute is that she gets that Jeff is daddy. If you ask her "Where's Jeff?" She'll run around the house yelling Daaaaa-eeeeee!!!!
Fish ("f-eeeee")
Blanket (sounds like "bubbie")

She also knows that cats say meow, horses say nay, cows say moo, owls say whoo whoo and sheep say baa. That pigs say oink hasn't stuck yet, and if I knew what monkeys said, well then I know she'd get that one too.

Emma LOVES pressing buttons. Particularly mine. But other buttons of fancy are in the elevator and on the Interac touch pad at any grocery or retail outlet... if there are buttons, Emma MUST press them.

And on the subject of buttons... mine are getting quite a beating from the temper tantrums that have become part of Emma's daily schtick. I mean, dear God, the full-bodyness of them is really quite something. First the arms go way up high over her head, then a nanosecond later come crashing down by her sides. And again. And again. Then her back arches as she prepares to attack the fridge. Head on collisions. Refridgerator alphabet magnets everywhere.

Although these tantrums are better than booster seat/kitchen table ones, where full bowls of food (like macaroni & cheese) have gone flying through the air, and spoons covered in yogurt have been hurled to the other side of the room.

How in the hell did I think I was going to be capable to having TWO children?

Has her mother's love of footware. Not only is the kid absolutely determined to get her own shoes on her feet, she totally gets off on trying on all of my shoes too. And if that isn't cute enough, when it's time to go out she'll run around and grab everyone's shoes (yes, she knows whose are whose... I suppose all girls do. Must be an innate thing), and then helps put them on your feet! Truly. Too. Cute. Oh - she also knows the difference between boots & shoes. Told ya, she's a girl.

Have I mentioned that she's a pro at blowing kisses??!! Hand over mouth, followed by a very loud "MMMMMMaaaaaaaaaa"

She can now comprehend the word "down". Like, when she's done eating and wants to come down from her booster, she'll say "DOEN". Or when we're upstairs and she wants to go down, she has no problem letting you know. But when we're already downstairs, and it's time to go up, she'll still request that you bring her down. And if she wants you to pick her up, again one look in the eye followed by a "DOEN"!

And lastly, the latest & greatest obsession this month is with my keys. Don't ask me how, when, or why because I never ever knew she was paying attention, but the kid can pick out my Lexus key from my entire keyring... EVERY TIME. Now the new thing is that she MUST be the one to put the key in the car door to open it. (Not doing wonders for the paint job.) Also adorable is that she doesn't get that the Lexus key doesn't open ALL doors, everywhere. Like today, she was trying to use the key to open the doctor's door - the one that separates the waiting room from the rest of the office. And she doesn't understand that the house key is also different. And my God, does she ever get pissed when you try to show her the correct key. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT take the keys away from Emma. And everytime we're about to go out she has to be the one to hold the keys (pronounced "knees"). Or she'll just grab them off the table, take her shoes and bring them both over to mean, signalling that she's bored at home and would like to go out. A woman about town at 17 months. What more could I ask for?
