For Emma's 1st birthday, we celebrated by having a few of her friends over to our house for a little brunch. I was planning on eating, drinking, being merry, that sort of thing. But really was quite worried about what the kids were going to do for entertainment once they realized they were too old for most of Emma's toys (except her Barbi quad - quite cute to see two boys fighting over her pink motorized car).
Who would have thought the biggest bash of the whole afternoon came in the form of a whack of helium balloons? Oh my God... the three boys went to town on hitting, jumping, and more or less just plowing balloons into each other and anyone else who dared come in their way. Okay fine, as I write this I realize it's no surprise at all.. they're boys. But the cool thing was the way the girls (Emma & Julia) were so innately female! While the boys stayed in the middle of the room, pounding the shit out of the balloons, the girls were, well, girls. Sat on the sidelines just watching the show and eating cookies. Likely thinking something along the lines of "Gawd, boys are stupid." And dontcha just know they'll be thinking this for the next 14 years.
